Venerable Meegahakumbure Dhammagavesi

Venerable Meegahakumbure Dhammagavesi, the Chief incumbent of Lankarama Buddhist Vihara has served the Buddhist community in Sydney in a meaningful way since arrival in Sydney in 1992 upon an invitation made by the Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara Association.

He was born in 1962 at Uggalboda in the Kalutara District in Sri Lanka, as the fourth son in a respectable family and was named Piyatilaka.  Having completed his primary education at the Uggalboda Maha Vidyalaya, he joined the Gnanodaya Maha Vidyalaya, Kalutara and the Vidyarathana Pirivena, Horana for higher education.

While studying at the Vidyarathana Pirivena, ideas of a religious discipline developed in his mind and as a result with the blessings of his parents, he entered the robes in 1981.

Thereafter he spent his time as a novice recluse in the Madakada Forest Hermitage, under the able guidance of the Most Venerable Ampitiye Mangala, the Chief incumbent of the Hermitage.

In 1982 he received Higher Ordination in an August assembly of Maha Sanga, headed by the Most Venerable Sirimalwatte Ananda, the Chief incumbent of the Malwatta Chapter.

Thereafter Ven. Dhammagavesi entered the Maharagama Bhikku Training Centre and studied Buddhism in depth for nine years under the guidance of the Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thera and Ampitiye Rahula Thera Nayaka Thera.  Ven. Dhammagavesi sat for examinations conducted by the Vidyodaya Pirivena and was conferred the titles of Teacher of Buddhist Discipline (Vinaya) and Dhamma.  In 1989 he completed the Pandit examination conducted by the Department Of Education in Sri Lanka in conjuction with the Royal Asiatic Society for oriental studies.

In 1991, with the blessings of Most Ven. Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thera he arrived in Australia and served the Melbourne community in association with Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera at the Springvale Buddhist Vihara.

Ven Dhammagavesi is currently studying social, religious, and psychological disciplines at the University of Western Sydney, Australia.

In recognition of valuable services of propagating the Buddha Dhamma in Australia and Sri Lanka, the Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera of the Three Sects, in association with the Cultural Department of Sri Lanka, conferred the honorary Salutation of Vishwa Keerthi Sri Saddhamma Wagishwara Lokaththachari in December 2002. May the Triple Gem bless Ven Dhammagavesi to continue Buddhist services to the community for many more years to come.
