Commemoration of Vesak at Murray Farm Public School

It was a great memorable day at the Murray Farm Public School, when all the students, the Principal and the staff joined the Buddhist Scripture teacher Mrs Nalini Cooray to celebrate Vesak.

The whole area was illuminated with Vesak Lanterns of different colours, shapes, and sizes. The parents helped the children in making the lanterns. The assembly was conducted by the Buddhist Scripture teacher Mrs Cooray and she administered Pansil. Dr Piyasoma Medis was the guest speaker who spoke in a very impressive manner and highlighted the importance on this thrice-blessed day [more..]

Lankarama Vesak Celebrations 2003

Thousands of devotees gathered at Lankarama Vihara on Sunday 18th May 2003 to observe Sil, make pooja and to take part in traditional Vesak celebrations.

The adverse weather conditions that soaked Sydney for days cleared as if by magic to permit the religious activities and celebrations.

A record number of devotees (nearly 250 children and over 300 adults) observed Sil.

It was estimated that nearly 800 devotees were served with dana/meal between 11:30am and 1:00pm. There was no way of estimating how many attended as there was a constant flow of people in and out of the temple.

A total of $14,094 was received as donations and membership fee by the Vihara on this day alone (Membership $4,835, Chethiya donation and payment of pledges $5,600, Other Donations $110, Youth Group vegetarian hot dog and drink stalls collection $219, from Youth Group Journal $780, String Hoper Stall (profit) $2550).

The traditional Dansala presented tea/coffee/soft drinks for devotees.  This was organised by the Lankarama Youth group.  A Vegetarian Hotdog Stall (free of charge) was also organised by the Youth Group.  Food packets (string hopper) were also sold at very low price with all proceeds going to the Vihara development.

Sanga Bakthi Pranama and Guru Puda Ceremony held on 04/05/03

The SLBVA has organised a special religious event - "Sanga Bakthi Pranama and Guru Puda" followed by a Maha Pirith Desanaya at Lankarama on Sunday 4 May 2003. Three main purposes of this event were:

  1. To recognise the religious and social services of Ven Dhammagavesi (eg. Ven Dhammagavesi has been awarded with a special Honour recently in Sri Lanka) and Ven Siri Dhamma

  2. To recognise the services of teachers (present and past) of Dhamma and Sinhala Schools (Parramatta, Minto, St Mary's and Lankarama, and ex Schools at Eastlakes and Campsie)

  3. To bless the community, especially the above mentioned categories.
